Decorating the bathroom in your home extension

Part C – Decorating your bathroom

In Part A of our new decorating series we outlined some steps to make the existing rooms in your home or the new rooms that have come into being thanks to a home extension decorating-friendly, and in Part B we gave you 10 tips to help you turn your bedroom into the comfy room of your dreams.

Now we’ll share some tips that we’ve collected from our Design Consultants that will help you turn your bathroom into a room you’ll have to queue to use! This is a good thing, we think…

Here are 10 ways to decorate your bathroom and inject it with a bit of you:

  1. Get creative with mirrors. Mirrors are a great and simple way to inject a bit of you into your bathroom and establish a theme. Try scouring your local junk shop for a mirror that’s oozing with character and instantly transform your bathroom into a vintage-style powder room or a luxurious retreat.
  2. KISS. Pucker up and prepare to ‘keep it simple, stupid’! If you can’t decide how to decorate your bathroom, your best bet is to keep it simple with soft and natural shades. Choose furniture with clean lines and keep accessories to a minimum to make the room seem bigger than it actually is.
  3. Get horizontal. If you’re working with a small bathroom, try introducing a horizontal line around the width of the room with tiles or paint to visually widen the space.
  4. Sneak in storage. A clever storage panel within a fitted bath can be used to store toiletries and cleaning products, keeping the area neat and clutter-free.
  5. Don’t shy away from wallpaper. Provided you look after it properly, wallpaper can transform any room into the room of your dreams and bright wallpaper in particular looks stunning against a white backdrop. Even if the space you’re working with is small, you can still get away with bright colours as long as the pattern is simple! Hanging wallpaper doesn’t have to be a nightmare, either. Follow this step-by-step guide and minimise the risk of ending up in tangled lengths of torn paper.
  6. Shelve it. If space is tight, adding a few shelves with an integrated towel rail is a great and simple way to ensure that your bathroom stays as tidy as possible.
  7. Opt for glossy tiles. Glossy tiles reflect light, making the room brighter and appear larger than it actually is. Provided you mop regularly, they also have the added advantage of giving the space that ‘sparkling clean’ look!
  8. Give your old vanity a makeover. Make your vanity the focal point of the room by painting it in a bright or ‘kicky’ colour and adding unique door knockers.
  9. Open up the space. If you are lucky enough to have an en suite attached to your master bedroom, give your master suite flow by installing French doors and glass walls. If you are in the process of getting a home extension, your Design Consultant will run through ideas like this with you that will visually open up the master suite and give it an elegant and versatile look.
  10. Tile the walls. Use the same oversized tiles on both the walls and the floor to increase the appearance of the size of your bathroom. Keep this one to yourselves as it’s one of our Design Consultant’s favourite secrets!
